Something which has got me unreasonably irate recently is membership offers. I was talking to someone the other day about Masterclass, and they were saying why it was good and worth looking into it.
I looked into it.
BE YOUR BEST IN 2024. Get 40% off! New Year offer ends soon! screamed the headline.
Six quid a month? Sounds ok.
Zooming out slightly…
Ah.
So it’s not six quid a month, is it? It’s £72, right now.
It’s not really £6 a month unless I can actually give you six of my hard-earned pounds once a month and get it.
I know a lot of places do this. Skillshare is another one.
At least with Skillshare you do have the option of paying monthly, albeit at a vastly higher cost. The annual price still isn’t $13.99/month though, I’d argue!
(sidenote: I remember when Skillshare was $99/year and you could regularly get 40-50% discounts on that - I was a member for a few years on that deal!)
Strava is a bit more up front about it. Annual is still best value, and here is how much it’ll cost you for a year. Which works out at £3.44/month.
Reminds me, must renew my sub for that.
